What you do to your yard during the winter months can have a significant impact on your spring yard workload. Because San Diego yards are not generally affected by freezing temperatures, it is easy to do most lawn maintenance jobs that will help you minimize necessary work in the spring.

Juniper Landscape Company of San Diego offers some winter yard maintenance tips and ideas to help you get your yard ready for the coming spring.

  • De-thatch with a rake. Spend some rake time and truly de-thatch your yard. Thatch is the buildup of old leaves and dead grass that can strangle the new grass attempting to push through. Run the rake through your grass deeply, working a small area at a time. Dispose of the dead grass and leaves you rake up rather than allowing them to sit in piles on your yard.
  • Aerate your yard with cleats. This is one of the easiest yard jobs ever; simply walk over your yard with shoes with metal cleats or with special aeration clip-ons to your shoes. This action breaks up compaction and prepares the soil for spring’s growth burst.
  • Test your soil. While some of your plants are dormant, it is a good time to test your soil and adjust the pH if necessary. Your extension office can offer you a free soil testing kit or you can have a yard service like Juniper Landscape Company in San Diego perform the test for you. You may need to add lime if your soil is too acidic.
  • Seed bare patches. You can spend these months getting ready to repair bare patches in your yard. Grab some cheesecloth and a few iron pins, seed the bare spots and cover them with the cloth to keep the seeds from blowing away. Water these areas daily and remove the cloth carefully when the grass starts to grow. Alternatively, arrange to have bare patches covered with sod for an instant fix.
  • Compost, mulch and fertilizer. It is very easy to make your own organic fertilizer and mulch if you have a small space for a compost heap. Simply cordon off the area with some boards or blocks and drop in any organic material you wish along with shredded newspaper or other biodegradable objects. Turn periodically with a pitchfork to create an instant fertilizer/mulch combo.

Juniper Landscape Company of San Diego can help you get your yard ready for spring quickly and easily. Contact them today to set up regular maintenance to keep your yard looking its best.

I must say that Juniper Landscape Company exceeded my expectations, completing the job in a timely fashion and for a fair price which we negotiated ahead of time, and which did not change even though there were difficulties with the terrain around my home in Stonebridge Estates (Scripps Ranch). Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

I have a side strip of yard which is on the street. The original landscaping was VERY high maintenance and not attractive. I was always out there cleaning up the leaf litter or be fined by the HOA. I hired Juniper Landscape Company. They came out and actually listened to what I wanted. They... Read More

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More

Jesse & Gabe, I want to extend my thanks to you and your crew for participating in the Yard Crashers project the past few days.
