Winter Tips For A Beautiful Yard During A Drought

The mild climate and easy living of San Diego encourage homeowners to spend time in their yards and gardens.  In order to do this, it is important to have low-maintenance plants and landscaping options that allow you to enjoy your yard year round without using too much water.  Fortunately, you have many options when it comes to water-wise plants, and winter is a great time to choose some new additions for your yard.

  • Choose non-plant options. You can fill your yard with many non-plant options such as hardscaping that will cut down on the amount of maintenance you have to do and give you useful areas for you and your family to enjoy. Depending on your budget, you could add seating, a fire pit, a patio or a large outdoor kitchen.  You can also install walkways to cut down on grassy areas, or place gravel in strategic locations.
  • Choose plants from similar climates. If you are not going with native species, try to be sure that the plants you choose come from places with climates similar to San Diego’s.  The Mediterranean and Australia are often good places to find plants that will adapt well to our climate and require similar amounts of water.  San Diego is Zone 10 on the coast and Zone 9 inland according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s climate zones.
  • Choose areas that do not get direct sun and can be well-mulched to conserve water. When you are planning your landscaping, be sure to consider where you will place your plants.  The best choices are areas that are at least partially shaded because water will not evaporate as quickly from these locations.  You should also mulch well to conserve water and keep plants hydrated.
  • Consider pots instead of beds. Pots can provide a good foundation for smaller plants and are much easier to control in terms of water and soil.  Instead of planting your new plants in beds, try them out for a year or so in pots, moving them around to determine the best locations and trying various amounts of water on them.  You will learn a lot about which plants work well in various areas of your yard, as well as how much work will be involved with them.

Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

I have a side strip of yard which is on the street. The original landscaping was VERY high maintenance and not attractive. Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
