Pruning, or cutting back growth from trees and shrubs, is a necessary part of gardening. There are good reasons to prune your trees and shrubs, but there are also risks to performing these tasks yourself. Often, hiring a good landscaping company is the best way to ensure that your plants are pruned properly and do not suffer any damage.
Why Is Pruning Necessary?
Cutting back growth on both ornamental and food-production trees and bushes have been done for centuries. Very early in history, gardeners discovered that cutting back excess or dead growth made plants healthier and more productive. Since then, gardeners have carefully trimmed their plants on a regular schedule.
Pruning offers several benefits for plants, including:
Removing dead or dying branches. Sometimes, even with the best of care, branches on a tree or shrub will die. This is often indicated by the fact that leaves turn brown and the branch becomes brittle. Without pruning, the branch might break off naturally, but this can lead to problems, especially if the branch is a large one. Pruning helps improve safety for you and your family by removing dead growth that could pose a hazard if it falls on its own.
Allows room for new growth. You want your trees and shrubs to be healthy and full. Pruning can remove encroaching growth to make room for branches that will improve the appearance and health of your trees or shrubs. With careful guidance, trees or shrubs can be trained to grow in certain shapes or directions, making them a more beautiful addition to your yard.
Protects visitors from damage. If your shrubs hang over the sidewalk, they can encroach on pedestrians or bicyclists. It is important to regularly prune any growth that can catch on clothing or cause injury to those who are passing by. Additionally, very tall trees may interfere with power or phone lines. In some areas, homeowners are required by law to remove growth that can potentially impact utility lines.
Stopping insect and animal infestation. Some trees or shrubs create a friendly environment for certain insects or animals. Regularly trimming and pruning these plants makes it less likely that they will provide shelter for unwanted pests, which can then damage other plants or even your home. Additionally, well-trimmed shrubs and trees make it difficult for animals to make a home in them, reducing the number of unwanted visitors to your yard.
Pruning is an essential part of maintaining your yard. However, it is not a job for those with no experience or understanding of pruning techniques. You can kill a plant or tree very quickly with improper pruning methods.

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways.
