Warm and Cool Season Organic Gardens

Posted by San Diego Landscaper on Wednesday, 3 November , 2021

Many people who are new to organic gardening may not realize that all crops do not grow in all seasons.  This is especially true in San Diego, where the year-round mild climate might lead some to speculate that anything can grow throughout the year.  However, this is incorrect:  there are warm-season and cool-season organic crops, even in San Diego.

Why Do We Have Warm-Season and Cool-Season Crops?

It may seem self-evident that warm-season crops thrive in warmer temperatures, while cool-season crops prefer lower temperatures.  However, the reason for this difference is not always clear.  Why do some crops like the heat and some the cold?

It turns out the major difference between warm- and cool-season crops has to do with water content.  Cool-weather crops tend to have larger leaves with lots of water.  Because water is shed more easily in hot weather to evaporation, cool-season plants do best in a temperature range of 35 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit.  In fact, if these plants are exposed to temperatures much higher than this, they may prematurely put out seeds, a process known as “bolting.”  Bolting gives these plants a bitter flavor and inhibits their growth.

On the other hand, warm-season plants, which are often larger and tend to grow on vines or bushes, prefer temperatures of 65 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.  In most cases, these plants need a minimum of six hours of sunlight per day to enjoy good health.  For this reason, they tend to thrive in warmer temperatures.

How Can I Choose The Right Organic Plants for My Garden?

Organic gardening is not as simple as choosing some plants and some pots and putting them on your patio.  There are several things you need to consider when choosing organic plants for your yard or garden:

  • Temperature preference.  Planting cool-weather crops at the right time and waiting until it is warm enough for warm-weather plants will give you much better success with organic gardening.  It is important to understand each plant’s temperature preference in order to plant at the proper time.
  • Sunlight needs.  Some organic plants need full sun all day; some can get by with partial shade.  No matter which plants you choose, you should consider placement to ensure that these plants get the right amount of sunlight each day.
  • Water requirements.  Some organic plants are very thirsty, while others are drought-tolerant and need little water.  In fact, it is quite possible to overwater some plants!  It is important to ensure that you give your plants the right amount of water in order to prevent damage.

No matter what your planting goals, you can use the help of a professional and experienced landscape company.  Juniper Landscape Company offers our clients support and assistance in everything from choosing the right plants to optimal placement to easy maintenance techniques.  For more information on how we can help you build the perfect organic garden in your yard, contact us today.  We look forward to working with you on the organic landscape you want!

I must say that Juniper Landscape Company exceeded my expectations, completing the job in a timely fashion and for a fair price which we negotiated ahead of time, and which did not change even though there were difficulties with the terrain around my home in Stonebridge Estates (Scripps Ranch). Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

I have a side strip of yard which is on the street. The original landscaping was VERY high maintenance and not attractive. Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
