If you weed your flower beds properly, you will save yourself a great deal of work over the course of a year and have healthier, happier plants. Weeding does not just mean hours of stooping and bending to pull up undesired plants, however. You can take several steps to reduce the amount of weeding you must do that will also benefit the “true” plants that you wish to help thrive.
Stop digging. Many gardeners do not realize that endless tilling of the soil is actually bringing dormant weed seeds to the top inch or so of soil where they have a better chance to germinate. In other words, excessive digging may actually make your weed problem worse. Instead, dig only when and where you need to. Use a sharp-bladed tool to remove dandelions and other offensive weeds from your yard. Stop animals from digging as well by using humane restraint methods.
Keep mulch fresh. Two inches is usually an ideal depths for mulch around your plants; anything more can stifle the soil. However, much can contain weed seeds, so be sure to pluck offenders as soon as you spot them. Avoid stirring mulch too often; instead, let it settle and form a barrier to keep out weeds.
Weed early, weed often. There is no getting around actual weeding if you want a beautiful yard and garden. However, it is much easier to weed when the plants are young than when they have taken hold. Try to weed a little every day if possible, especially in the spring when weeds first take root. Once you have established a good weeding schedule, you will find that you have less work to do during each session.
Deadhead blooming weeds. If you miss certain weeds or they grow too quickly for you to stop them when they are young, deadhead them to keep the seeds from spreading. Chopping the heads off of weeds makes it easier to control the plant; you can then make a plan for attacking the larger weed itself.
Do not leave gaps. Your planting guide or a landscape professional can help you plant your bedding plants the right distance from each other. Do not guess; measure and follow directions for that particular plant to avoid gaps where weeds can thrive.

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
