Vertical Gardening: The New Space-Saving Technique
Posted by San Diego Landscaper on Wednesday, 29 July , 2015
Vertical gardening is one of the newest mind-blowing techniques that can maximize your garden space if you are dealing with a very small area. You can use purchased materials or make your own, but either way a vertical garden can be the answer to your gardening space issues! Juniper Landscape Company enjoys finding new ways to help San Diego residents create beautiful yards and gardens, so we are sharing some vertical gardening tips you can put to use in your own back yard or on your patio.
Choose your planting system. You can choose to purchase pockets made of recycled material similar to felt. These pockets are then attached to a wall or frame using metal grommets and screws. Trays made of lightweight plastic are good for a year’s planting, while you can use pot hangers to attach potted plants to a painted wooden pallet for a simple solution. You can also make your own planters from any suitable material and using a little imagination!
Locate your ideal spot. Think about the plants you will put in your vertical garden, and try to group them by sunlight and water needs. If your plants need at least six to eight hours a day of light, be sure to locate your vertical planter in a spot that is not shaded.
Choose the right plants. Plants that need a great deal of ground space to sprawl must be trained up strings or poles or planted elsewhere. However, even heavy plants can be planted vertically if you think about how you will support the weight and deal with the height of the plant.
Irrigate. Vertical gardens can reach great heights, so if the top rows are hard to reach, set up a drip irrigation system. If you keep your plantings low, you can also water by hand or with a garden hose.
Advantages of Vertical Gardening
There are many advantages to vertical gardening, including:
Saving space. You can plant a great deal more in a vertical garden than in a flat one of the same space.
Monitoring pests is simpler since you can see the plants more easily.
Picking and harvesting does not require stooping and bending.
Vertical gardens make fruits and vegetables easier to see, therefore making it less likely you will miss and waste some of your produce.

Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
