When it comes to fertilizers for your yard and garden, you have many options. Is there really a difference between organic fertilizers and those containing chemicals? Is there a valid reason to opt for organic? It turns out the answer is yes!
What Are Organic Fertilizers?
Organic fertilizers simply mean fertilizers that are created naturally rather than man-made from chemicals. They are the fertilizers that nature intends to work with the ecosystem to support healthy plant growth. They cover a wide range of products but are all derived directly from plant or animal products, so they also have the benefit of recycling waste materials that might otherwise create trash.
Inorganic fertilizers, which are often what are sold in stores, go through a manufacturing process, even if they are mined from natural minerals. Therefore, they often contain very low nutrient value relative to their organic counterparts. This means that they must often be applied several times to get their full benefit, since plants have a hard time uptaking their nutrients.
The Many Benefits of Organic Fertilizers
While many organic fertilizers are slow-releasing, they do have many benefits, such as:
Better delivery. Organic fertilizers tend to blend into the soil quickly and naturally, so they do not harden or encrust the soil as so many chemical fertilizers do. This also means that organic fertilizers will offer better flow for water, a more hospital home for microbes, and allow easier working of the soil than inorganic fertilizers.
Less soluble. While better solubility might seem like a good thing, it is actually very easy to “burn” your plants with a highly soluble chemical fertilizer. Because organic fertilizers are natural and gentle, it is much harder to harm your plants with them. While raw manure should be avoided, most organic fertilizer mixtures are very safe for most plants.
Offers similar soil amendments. Blood meal, eggshells and other organic components can easily be modified to deliver many of the same benefits for soil amendment as traditional inorganic chemical fertilizers without the harmful side effects. Because organic fertilizers are safer, they offer the best of both worlds: effective fertilization without the damage to the ecosystem or plants that is so often caused by chemical compounds.
Clean for the environment. The best advantage of organic fertilizers is that they will not leave harmful residue in your soil, water or other yard components. Unlike chemicals, organics are clean and safe for you, your family, pets and other animals as well as plants and grass. Organic fertilizers do not harm the water and leave no dangerous residue in your runoff to pollute other areas, as well.

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
