Pruning your plants can be confusing. On one hand, you want to keep your plants healthy and you recognize that removing dead or dying branches and leaves is an important part of that process. On the other hand, you do not want to prune too early, too late or too often. This can be especially problematic in a warm climate like San Diego when there may not be a natural “cold season” during which plants go dormant.
Juniper Landscape Company in San Diego offers the following tips for residents who want to keep their plants healthy by pruning regularly:
Know what to prune. A plant needs a good stalk, stem or trunk and some healthy branches, but dead or diseased stems, branches that cross other branches and suckers or shoots that form and grow quickly should be removed. These tax the plant’s health severely and can lead to infestations of harmful insect. No matter what time of the year, never be afraid to remove dead or decaying vegetation.
Spring bloomers should be pruned in the spring. Spring bloomers like azalea and lilac are best pruned just after they bloom, as they then have the year to “harden” their woody branches and prepare for next year’s blooms. You can prune them in the winter but you risk having no blooms for a year until the wood grows back.
Prune summer bloomers in the winter. Crape myrtle and other summer bloomers do well when pruned in the winter while they are dormant. You can cut these bushes, trees and shrubs back severely in the winter and still have luxurious summer growth.
Prune shrubs without blooms in winter. If you have a fire bush or other non-flowering shrub, prune it while it is dormant in the winter to do the least damage and enjoy the showiest spring growth.
Prune shade trees in the winter. If you must do some snipping, prune your shade trees during their dormant stage in the winter when they are not in leaf.
Prune evergreens in early spring. The best time to trim holly and other evergreens is in the spring, after their winter bloom has finished.

Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
