The Truth About Mulch

Mulching is the term used to describe the action of blanketing the ground around a plant with straw, rocks, bark or anything else. Mulch is typically spread beneath plants like trees and shrubs. Mulching offers several key benefits including:

Enhance Water Use – Mulch helps your landscape conserve water by allowing moisture to slowly evaporate from the soil’s surface.
Improve Plant Health – Mulch can contribute directly to a plant’s health. Organic mulch, like wood chips, straw or leaves, will decompose slowly and release nutrients into the soil which plants can use.
Inexpensive Options – Organic mulch is typically inexpensive or free. If you have pine trees in your yard, rake up fallen needles and use them as mulch, or ask a neighbor if you can have his or her leaves or needles.
Deter Weed Growth – If you hate weeding, adding mulch can actually deter the growth of weeds.
Aesthetics – Mulch certainly adds to the appearance of a landscape. Whether you enjoy the smell and look of pine chips or you prefer a modern stone, the addition of mulch will give you an elegant and well-kept look.

However, mulch also has a few drawbacks:

Avoid Black Plastic – While black plastic can halt weed growth, it can also suffocate the soil and roots.
Attract Rodents – Some mulch may create the perfect environment for rodents. Mouse feedings can also lead to plant death.
Cause Rot – If mulch is improperly applied around the base of a tree or plant, it could lead to rot. It is recommended that you keep mulch a few inches from trunks and stems.
