A new survey, commissioned by the National Association of Landscape Professionals in May 2015, reveals that 75 percent of people surveyed stated that it is important to have a yard or green space. Surprisingly, 74 percent of 18- to 34-year-olds surveyed stated that they think spending time outside in the yard or green space is very important.
Researchers were surprised to find that the generation of the “selfie” considers time in the yard important. However, when you consider what millennials value, it is actually not that surprising that they place a priority on having green areas around them. Research shows that millennials place importance on eating simpler and healthier foods. Further research supports this idea and shows that many millennials appreciate a healthy yard and thriving garden of their own to supply these organic foods.
Katheryn Chase, 34, was one of the millennials surveyed. She stated that she grew up gardening and wanted to pass this tradition on to her kids. She said that it was so important to her that she started planting in large plastic bins on the porch of her rental. Now that the family has a home with a yard, she has a large plot of land to use. She is pleased with her garden, saying, “We eat healthier…We eat organically and we know exactly where our food is coming from. And I love that my hard work in the garden is what put that food on the table.”
Another millennial surveyed, 32-year-old Anna Berry, stated that when she and her husband were looking for a house, having a yard that was big enough for both gardening and entertaining was important. “We wanted something with a lot of green space and a deck and a place for a garden. We enjoy having family and friends over for barbecues. And we wanted to have enough green space so everyone could play games and a place where everyone could hang out,” she said.
