In a recent blog entry, we shared steps for getting your lawn ready for the fall months. In this issue, we’ll talk about how to get your lawn mower ready for the down time.
How to Store Your Lawn Mower For Fall and Winter Months
Rather than simply storing your mower in the shed and forgetting about it until spring time, you’ll get far more life out of your mower by following these steps.
Remove the battery. Disconnect battery cables – beginning with the negative cable (the one with a minus sign on it). After then removing the battery and wiping it with a dry cloth, store it in a dry, cool place. You want to be especially sure not to store it near gas cans, a water heater or furnace.
Disconnect the spark plug. Doing this can help to prevent the mower from accidentally kick-starting. You can tape or tie the plug lead wire so that it stays out of the way.
Clean your entire mower. To avoid causing damage to your mower, clean any debris you find on it – this includes the undercarriage. A good tool for cleaning debris from the undercarriage is a putty knife and wire brush. Doing this will help to avoid the onset of rust and will keep the discharge chute clear.
Use fuel stabilizer the right way. If you’re ending the season with a half-full tank, fuel stabilizer can keep gasoline fresh for as long as 6 months. Be sure to use the stabilizer to fill up the entire tank. Once you’ve poured in the stabilizer, run your mower’s engine so that the stabilizer will be circulated throughout the entire mower’s system.
Change your mower’s air filter. Chances are your mower’s filter is paper or foam. For dirty or clogged foam filters, clean it in water and detergent, let it dry and put it back on. Clogged paper filters should simply be replaced.
Store your mower. It’s all about location, location, location. When it comes to your mower, make sure it’s covered and stored in a dry location that will protect it from the elements.

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
