Most of us do not think of the garden as a place where you can be seriously injured. However, each year, people visit emergency rooms and doctor’s offices due to injuries received while gardening. While most people recognize that power tools like mowers and trimmers can be dangerous, many do not realize that simple practices could make you or your family sick or cause injury while you are working in your garden.
Here are a few steps to take to ensure that you are safe from unintended injuries in your garden.
Wear gloves. Gloves do not just keep your hands looking pretty; they also protect you from microbes in the soil that can enter your skin through thorn punctures or other breaks. Your soil is full of pathogens, but your skin provides a safe barrier when you come into casual contact. However, if your skin is full of pricks from thorns or cuts from gardening work, you may accidentally make it easy for these microbes to infect you. Wear sturdy gloves to put a barrier between you and the contaminants.
Wear appropriate clothing. Long-sleeved shirts, sturdy shoes, long pants and headgear provide the same type of protection as gloves for the rest of your skin. They also shield you from harmful UV rays from the sun.
Dispose of fallen matter correctly. If you have trees that drop their fruit, you may be tempted to leave the fallen material over winter to “mulch” your ground. However, some droppings from trees can attract pests. For example, fallen fruit can attract the African fig fly, Zaprionus indianus, which has recently been identified as a potentially harmful invasive species in San Diego. Pick up fruit and place it in a plastic bag to avoid attracting insects or rodents. Do not place it in your compost pile; instead, dispose of it with your other trash.
Wash your hands. Every time you work in the yard, be sure to scrub your hands well with an antibacterial and antifungal soap. This will help you avoid cross-contamination from handling anything in your home after being exposed to possible harmful pathogens in the garden.

Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
