February in San Diego, like most months, is full of beautiful weather. However, the most beautiful months are just ahead–many people consider March and April the best time to be a San Diegan! While the rains fall and we anticipate warmer temperatures in just a few weeks, now is a great time to begin planning spring plantings and improvements to yards and gardens. Here is a handy checklist to be sure you are ready when spring arrives!
Test soil. Now is a great time to test the soil in your garden beds. Your local extension office or other agency can help with soil testing kits, or you can order them online or through your landscape maintenance provider. You should test your soil’s pH in each bed as well as test for phosphorus and potassium, at a minimum. Your landscape company can help you decide if you need other testing, as well. Late winter is a great time to amend your soil and give it a chance to rest prior to spring planting.
Inspect irrigation systems. Plants will only do as well as the soil you put them in; they will also only do as well as the water you give them. Now is a great time to check your watering systems and ensure that they are in good working order, or to think about upgrading to low-flow or drip irrigation to minimize water usage. You can also plan to change plants to drought-tolerant species that will require less water overall.
Make a plan for the removal or addition of plants. If you want to remove or add plants, now is a great time to make a plan to do so. Plants are much more likely to thrive when they are added at the right time of year, and spring is the best time to transplant most species. Additionally, many species are dormant during winter, so removal becomes much easier than at other times of the year.
Take care of pruning needs. Pruning is a job that must be done at the proper time in order to avoid harming the plant. If your trees or shrubs need pruning, it is best to speak to an expert and schedule this task at the right time of the year. It may also be advisable to prune in stages, particularly if this task has been neglected for some time.
Repair walkways and other hardscapes. Late winter is a great time to address broken walkways or needed repairs to patios and other hardscape features. It is also a good time to clean and repair fountains or other water features, to ensure that your fire features are in good working order, and to refill gas tanks after winter use.

I must say that Juniper Landscape Company exceeded my expectations, completing the job in a timely fashion and for a fair price which we negotiated ahead of time, and which did not change even though there were difficulties with the terrain around my home in Stonebridge Estates (Scripps Ranch). Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

I hired Juniper Landscape Company. They came out and actually listened to what I wanted. They... Read More

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
