Spring is finally here, and even though we don’t have much of a change of seasons in the San Diego area, you can definitely see a difference from the winter months. Temperatures generally stay mild during this time, with highs in the upper 60s and lows around 55, and rainfall in March and April is much more prevalent than at other times of the year. Furthermore, May will usually be a very dry month, so it is important to schedule your garden cleanup and refurbishment to take advantage of the weather at this time of year.
Spring Ideas For Cleanup and Improvement
Spring is a great time to clean up and improve your outdoor spaces. It is naturally a time when plants want to take root and grow, so new seedlings often thrive during these months. Even if you are simply transplanting mature plants, spring is a good time to do so. Here are some ideas to get you started with spring cleanup and spruce up of your yard and garden!
Take advantage of spring weather to plant or transplant. Almost every plant does better when planted or transplanted during moist, warm weather. Ideally, you want temperatures that are not stressful for young plants, meaning not too hot and not too cold. A good mix of sun and rain also helps new plants to develop strong roots. You can take advantage of spring weather to put out new seedlings or reorganize your beds by rearranging existing plants during this time.
Check on irrigation. Because spring usually features the months with the most rainfall, you want to check on your irrigation system and be sure you are not overwatering. Because rain falls somewhat regularly during March and April, these are good times to think about cutting back on your watering. An automatic timer on a sprinkler system can be adjusted to water less frequently, or a rain sensor gauge can be installed that will monitor for rainfall and adjust watering accordingly.
Be sure to fertilize. Helping your soil out a bit in the spring by amending it with quality organic fertilizers will allow your plants every advantage as they begin their yearly growth cycle. Have your soil tested by an expert to determine what types of fertilizers or amendments you need, and adjust accordingly. A yearly soil pickup can make a huge difference in the size, quality, healthiness, and beauty of your plants.
Make repairs. Spring is also a good time to address issues such as cracked or broken hardscape, walls that need refurbishing, or the addition of water and fire features. The mild weather makes this a great time for all types of outdoor work, and you can often beat the rush of summer in hiring skilled professionals for your job.

I must say that Juniper Landscape Company exceeded my expectations, completing the job in a timely fashion and for a fair price which we negotiated ahead of time, and which did not change even though there were difficulties with the terrain around my home in Stonebridge Estates (Scripps Ranch). Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
