Spring is finally here, and it is time to take stock of your yard and think about ways to bring in life and color. Giving your yard a “spring cleaning” is just as important as doing so for your house—and may bring you more hours of enjoyment in the long run!
What Spring Plants Work Well In San Diego?
While San Diego is blessed with a beautiful climate year-round, we do have definite seasons in terms of what will bloom at certain times of the year. Spring is probably the most colorful, with thousands of varieties bursting into color throughout the area. Some of the most famous varieties in and around San Diego include:
Tecolote ranunculus. The Flower Fields are a well-known attraction in the San Diego area, drawing thousands of visitors each spring to their 50-plus acres of Persian Buttercups. Stretching to the horizon, beautiful rows of flowers are always a lovely sight to remind us that spring is here.
Many area gardens sport beautiful hybrid, tea, and exotic roses. They are also a favorite of amateur gardeners, who are proud to show off their colorful blooms each year. Roses are a perennial favorite that, with proper care, can be enjoyed for many years.
Useful as well as beautiful, lavender blooms wild in many areas around San Diego. Organic gardeners have harnessed the area’s friendly climate to grow it at home as well, and it is not uncommon to see little beds of the purple-tipped plants spring up all around a neighborhood.
Desert plants. The desert just to the east of San Diego offers a wide array of plant choices that will also do well in many yards. A bonus is that they are drought-tolerant and often low-maintenance. Consider Desert Dandelion or Chicory, Pygmy Stonecrop, Popcorn Flower, Phacelia, Fiddleneck Ferns and Poppies as well as the beautiful white Wishbone Bush for your yard—all products of local deserts that can be added easily to any San Diego landscape plan.
Organic gardening. Don’t forget to stock your yard with edibles as well as beautiful flowers. Warm-season vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, beans, cucumbers, squash, turnips, and eggplant can all be grown easily in San Diego’s climate. Lettuce greens, tomatoes, and onions in containers on your patio make your dinner salad a breeze!
Spices and herbs. You can easily cultivate a number of spices, particularly those with Mediterranean roots, in San Diego. Try adding basil, oregano, parsley, rosemary, and mint to your garden plan.

I must say that Juniper Landscape Company exceeded my expectations, completing the job in a timely fashion and for a fair price which we negotiated ahead of time, and which did not change even though there were difficulties with the terrain around my home in Stonebridge Estates (Scripps Ranch). Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

I hired Juniper Landscape Company. They came out and actually listened to what I wanted. They... Read More

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
