San Diego Winter Weather Is Perfect For Plants

Posted by San Diego Landscaper on Wednesday, 26 January , 2022

In most of the country, winter is not the best time for maintaining a beautiful yard.  Our neighbors to the East, particularly those in more northern states, often have feet of snow with which to contend and sub-zero temperatures for weeks at a time.  Here in San Diego, however, we are blessed with a mild winter season that allows for maintaining beautiful yards with thriving plants.  Make the most of your winter yard by choosing plants that fare well in the conditions that characterize this season, and you’ll have a lovely landscape all year long!

San Diego Winter–A Mild But Wet Season

San Diego winter is characterized by two factors:  mild, cool temperatures and rainfall.  Because our city is so close to the desert, we get our largest amounts of rain during the winter months, while summer is often very dry.

To illustrate this fact, look at the weather characteristics of each of the three winter months, December, January, and February:

  • With an average low of 49 and a high of 66, December is our coolest month.  It is also one of the wettest, with an average rainfall total of 1.6 inches.  December can have a lower average temperature of five to eight degrees cooler than November, so it is wise to address any issue with tropical plantings at this time.  Further, the increased rain may affect plants that prefer dryer soil, so make plans to put these plants under cover when possible.
  • January’s average temperature is actually a bit higher than December’s, with an average of 50 for the low and 66 for the high.  Rainfall increases to two inches as well, so it is important to address drought-tolerant plantings.  During this time, many plants go dormant, although there are plants that will bloom during the rainy season as well.
  • February is almost a carbon copy of January, with an average low of 51, a high of 66, and two inches of rainfall.  February brings the rainy season to a close; March’s temps will begin to rise and rainfall decrease, with April having only .6 inches overall.

While some drought-tolerant plants do not like the rainy season, some of them actually store up water during this time, so it is important to ensure that you understand your landscape needs and choose plants according to your schedule and ability to maintain.  Of course, you can also have a professional landscape company maintain your plants, which will give you much more freedom to choose what you want for your yard.

I must say that Juniper Landscape Company exceeded my expectations, completing the job in a timely fashion and for a fair price which we negotiated ahead of time, and which did not change even though there were difficulties with the terrain around my home in Stonebridge Estates (Scripps Ranch). Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

I have a side strip of yard which is on the street. The original landscaping was VERY high maintenance and not attractive. I was always out there cleaning up the leaf litter or be fined by the HOA. I hired Juniper Landscape Company. They came out and actually listened to what I wanted. They... Read More

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
