San Diego Gardens Need Proper Spacing

Posted by San Diego Landscaper on Wednesday, 29 July , 2015

Do you know how far apart to set your plants? If not, it is likely that you could use some help from an expert like Juniper Landscape Company in San Diego.

Spacing new plants properly is a very important step in having a healthy garden. Juniper Landscape Company can help you determine the right spacing for your plants and offers the following handy guide to help you with laying out many types of plants.

  • Look up vegetable spacing to ensure proper growth. If you are going to grow edible plants, you must allow the right spacing or your plants will not yield their full bounty. Because different plants have such different recommended spacings, it is wise to look up the proper spacing before beginning to plant and to mark off those spaces before placing the plants.
  • Zig-zag spacing can be more compact than linear spacing. Zig-zagging your plants not only offers you the best staging for growth but also provides interesting patterns for your flower beds or other planting spaces.
  • Plant according to purpose. The purpose of ornamental plants has a great deal to do with their spacing. After all, if a plant has a recommended minimum spacing of 12 inches, you could easily put these plants 24 inches apart as well. The overall plan of landscape spacing is dependent on the way you use your plants. For example, a border plant around the foundation of a home will be spaced farther apart than a plant that is being massed in a bed for a full effect.
  • Think about how the plant will grow. Some plants spread out as they grow, so you should take this into account when spacing them. Plants should always have a little room to “move” during the growth phase, even if you want a tightly cohesive final result.
  • The closer plants are together, the more care they need. Plants must have a certain amount of room both while growing and when mature, so the closer they are together the more they must be pruned, trimmed and take care of. If you are going to grow a very closely spaced bed of plants, be sure to include plenty of maintenance time in your schedule. Alternatively, remove some plants after the others have filled in well.

I have a side strip of yard which is on the street. The original landscaping was VERY high maintenance and not attractive. Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
