If you haven’t tried planting herbs in containers or a section of your yard, make this year the time you do so! Herbs bring so many benefits to our lives, including tasty spices for cooking and even medicinal treatments for common ailments. Here is a list of some herbs that will grow well in San Diego yards and gardens and common methods for planting them:

  • This salad herb is also known as roquette and is popular in Europe. Lately, it has made its way to the US as an addition to green mixes. It has a sharp flavor and thrives as an annual in your garden. Plant it where it will receive partial sunlight and some shade during the day. Water it frequently for a good crop.
  • Bay laurel. The bay leaf is used dried rather than fresh and should be removed after cooking. This tree or shrub will stand quietly in your garden for years to come and provide you with ready-to-pick leaves most of the year. Dry them in a dehumidifier or in the sun, then store in an airtight container.
  • This newcomer allows you to use the leaves in salad and the young flowers in beverages or ice. Give it plenty of water to bring out the blooms.
  • This herb is also one that gives you more bang for your buck with dried leaves creating a soothing tea and pretty flowers that brighten up your herb garden.
  • These mild sprouts impart an onion flavor to your cooking without the harsh pungency of the root plants. Chop them fresh for the best results.
  • The coriander plant has a sharp, distinct flavor often used in southwestern cooking. A little cilantro goes a long way, so use it sparingly by chopping fresh leaves into salsa and other dishes.
  • This is an herb that is usually used dried, although fresh dill can impart a great flavor to seafood, especially salmon. Grow in partial sun with regular watering.
  • This plant is actually a member of the oregano family but has a balsam flavor that complements many meats and other hardy dishes. It will grow anywhere you grow oregano; in sunny spots with plenty of water.
  • This is one of the most popular spices and can be grown in a flowerpot on your porch for instant fresh seasoning if you like. Pick the leaves and chop them immediately to put into stews, soups, sauces, and meat dishes.
  • Parsley has such a fine, delicate flavor that you can add it directly to almost any dish. Just cut the stalks and leaves close to the base of the plant and chop up for an instant garnish.
  • This plant’s leaves have a subtle lemony aroma with a hint of mint. Use it fresh for the best flavor.

I must say that Juniper Landscape Company exceeded my expectations, completing the job in a timely fashion and for a fair price which we negotiated ahead of time, and which did not change even though there were difficulties with the terrain around my home in Stonebridge Estates (Scripps Ranch). Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

I have a side strip of yard which is on the street. The original landscaping was VERY high maintenance and not attractive. I was always out there cleaning up the leaf litter or be fined by the HOA. I hired Juniper Landscape Company. They came out and actually listened to what I wanted. They... Read More

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
