Organic Pest Control That Really Works

Posted by San Diego Landscaper on Sunday, 27 August , 2023

Are you concerned about using chemical pest control methods in your yard and garden?  If so, you are not alone.  Millions of people are learning about the benefits of organic pest control and how it can successfully be used to control all types of pests without the potentially harmful side effects of commercial chemical preparations.  If you are looking for eco-friendly options that truly control pests, sometimes even better than traditional pesticides, read on!

Categories of Organic Pest Control

Pests are often insects but can include larger animals such as rodents or rabbits.  Whatever the case may be, they can quickly destroy the yard you worked so hard to build.  It is important to control pests early in the process so that you avoid a larger problem.  That means identifying the type of pest and the best method to use for control and applying it as soon as possible.

Organic pest control methods can typically be divided into four major categories:

  • Soil amendments. Starting with the soil is often the best way to nip pest problems in the bud.  The use of diatomaceous earth or DE for bedding plants has been shown to reduce pest infestations, while beneficial nematodes can also be introduced into the environment and can help to control budding pests.  By treating the soil first, you may be able to prevent many pest infestations.
  • Cover the plants. Floating row covers and other plant covers have been used for centuries to reduce or eliminate pest infestations. By covering plants, particularly at relevant times when insects proliferate, you may be able to keep them off your plants altogether.  Mesh covers allow water and sunlight in without allowing pests to flourish.
  • Soaps and oils. Certain organic soaps and oils, such as neem oil, do not harm plants or animals but will repel insects.  These are a great way to protect your plants without having the nasty side effects of commercial chemicals.  They either kill the insects outright or force them to move on to another location.  Some are also infused with helpful botanicals and other extracts to give your plants needed nutrition.
  • Hand removal. While this is the most time-consuming method, it is the least invasive and often has excellent results.  Simply removing insects when they appear, especially large ones like worms, can greatly reduce the damage to your plants.  This can be done at certain times when insects are most likely to appear or on an ongoing basis.  Insects can then be disposed of or relocated.  With an understanding of the insect life cycle, removal can often be accomplished before mating and reproduction occurs, greatly reducing the insect problem.

I must say that Juniper Landscape Company exceeded my expectations, completing the job in a timely fashion and for a fair price which we negotiated ahead of time, and which did not change even though there were difficulties with the terrain around my home in Stonebridge Estates (Scripps Ranch). Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

I have a side strip of yard which is on the street. The original landscaping was VERY high maintenance and not attractive. Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
