If you’ve got the itch to start a summer vegetable garden and don’t know if you’ve got a green thumb, we’ll share a few tips in this issue to get you on your way.
The Time is Now!
This is actually the ideal time to plant the seeds for your vegetable garden. The best method is to plant your veggies (tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, etc.) in small containers now with the idea of moving them into your gardening space when the soil gets a bit warmer.
Location, Location, Location
One of the key things to remember about veggies is that they need about 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. In fact, for veggies, there’s no such thing as too much sun. The more sunlight they get, the stronger your harvest will be.
Get Your Hands Dirty
Veggies can be kind of particular about the soil they grow in. Get your hands down into the soil; it should be on the loose side so that the plants’ roots will be able to penetrate. If it’s hard or compacted, use a tiller, shovel or hoe to break it up and turn it over.
Another thing to keep in mind is that plants need their energy to grow, so make sure your soil is nutrient-rich. A good trick-of-the-trade is to heap plenty of organic material into the soil.
How to Space Your Plants
This is crucial because if there’s not enough room, your plants could be more vulnerable to disease and stunted growth. Make sure you follow the instructions on the seed packet. Even though they may look small now, your plants will most likely grow much bigger when they begin producing fruit.
If space allows, a good rule to follow is to make your garden with 11 rows; each of which is 10 feet long. Also, make sure they run north to south so that they can take full advantage of the sunlight.

I must say that Juniper Landscape Company exceeded my expectations, completing the job in a timely fashion and for a fair price which we negotiated ahead of time, and which did not change even though there were difficulties with the terrain around my home in Stonebridge Estates (Scripps Ranch). Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
