Roughly two years ago, Juniper Landscape Company began helping San Diego residents with the installation of Modpools. The parent Modpools company, located in Canada, billed the refurbished shipping containers as capable of holding 4,800+ gallons of water while serving as small swimming pools.

We have recently decided to discontinue our affiliation with Modpools after first-hand negative experiences with the product.

The 8’ x 20’ model was purchased and delivered in late 2017. Here is a summary of our Modpools experience.

  • Damaged paint that causes rust.
    The pool was shipped from Canada and arrived with paint damage across much of the exterior of the pool. Modpools and their shipping company caused the damage as forklifts impaired the paint on the sides and bottom. Simply put, damaged paint causes rust. The damage included scratched and gouges, which can be penetrated by water – causing rust to develop. Modpools advice to us was to use a box of spray paint to touch up the issues; however, the finish will never match, fix the root problem of rust or look the same.
  • Leaky seals. The seal around the window leaks and the bolts attaching the window to the pool are rusting and leaking. We have since learned that they use acrylic for the window, which does not hold up well with pool chemicals.
  • Extensive rusting, and a failed DIY-repair approach.

We have seen rust all over the interior and exterior of the Modpool, which is a huge concern when considering water safety and longevity. Modpools attempted to correct this issue with a short-lived silicon patch. The rust, however, persists and is increasing. Even with a five-year warranty on the liner its

elf, we were advised by Modpools to “fix it ourselves with epoxy.”

  • A divider wall that is coming apart; dangerous use of plastic.
    The leaking problem extends to connection points meant to hold the divider wall in place.

The divider wall itself began coming apart and cracking – less than one year after installation. This is caused by the plastic being too thin and the screws being placed too close to the edge. We have since learned that the plastic they use has BPA (an industrial chemical) that could contaminate the pool water and be potentially hazardous to swimmers.

  • Incorrect dimensions, a demolished wall that had just been installed, and an expensive crane operator.
    The overall dimensions and engineering specs were not accurate, which caused massive issues during installation, including using a sledgehammer to remove sections of wall – one that had just been installed – and paying a $600-an-hour crane operator to simply sit and wait until the newly installed wall had been demolished. The cargo doors and equipment room leaks, rusts, doesn’t drain properly, and all the equipment settings and details Modpools provided were incorrect. The window still doesn’t line up with our design due to Modpools misinformation and erroneous placement of the wall. Modpools has done nothing to correct this problem. In fact, we had to pay a professional pool company to remedy the issues.
  • Poor customer service and threats of legal action.
    As for their customer service, Modpools’ is poor. We wanted the 10+ major issues to be fixed prior to paying for the pool in full and Modpools had their attorneys threaten to sue us when we refused to pay the balance. We were sent letters from their lawyer threatening us with a lawsuit in Canada unless we paid in full prior to the issues being fixed and with the promise they would warranty and fix the issues. This has been going on for a full year now, and nothing is fixed or resolved. All attempts at a resolution have been met with long delays, unreturned phone calls, and ignored texts or emails. In the end, their strategy seems to be to threaten and sue customers that have issues. Modpools accidentally sent us a letter of intent to sue a totally different customer that was having the same issues. As for our warranty, we have been passed from one person to the next over the last year, as Modpools continually fire employees – forcing us to start the process all over again. We wanted to return the pool from the very first day. Modpools threatened that if we did not take the pool, they would sue us, and we would be responsible for all tariffs, the return transit costs, and any NAFTA penalties.
  • The bottom line: Modpools not ready for the marketplace
    We think pools should not leak. This is a big problem and Modpools has not been willing or able to fix it or warranty it, and will not respond to exchanging it, replacing it or refunding our money. In our opinion, the Modpools is not ready for the market, and the company owners and employees do not seem to have the knowledge or inclination to fix the issues or warranty the product.

For example, the company owner always advised us to place chlorine tabs directly in the skimmer and keep one there as part of the setup and on-going maintenance of the pool. This is one of the worst things you could possibly do to your equipment according to the numerous pool companies we have consulted with.

In the end, we strongly do not recommend purchasing a Modpools product. The owner and his wife do not seem to care about their customers or product and it shows in all the interactions with them and their employees.

Nothing has been fixed and we are left with a very expensive rusting and leaking metal box. They are very aggressive and unhelpful, have no empathy, and DO NOT stand behind their product at all.
