If you are currently enjoying some organic gardening in your San Diego yard, May is a great time to think about certain gardening tasks. Even better, you can talk to your landscape professional about expanding your organic gardening capabilities this year if you are ready to get even more out of your outdoor spaces! Here are some tips for enjoying this beautiful month of San Diego weather in your yard and garden:
Be sure to irrigate your food-producing trees. Having citrus or other food-producing trees is a great way to take advantage of yard space to produce wholesome organic food with minimal footprint use. May is a wonderful time to be sure your trees are properly irrigated and have the proper depth for future watering. Your landscape professional can check your trees to be sure they are properly set up to retain the right amounts of water for health and vitality.
Feed plants. May is a good time to apply organic plant food to plants such as camellias and other late spring or early summer bloomers. Your gardening professional can help you determine the best mixture to use that will both nourish your plants and protect the environment.
Consider adding new plants. Sowing edible organics like citrus, peppers, herbs, and tomatoes not only gives your yard more diversity and attracts pollinators but has the added benefit of putting food on the table for you and your family! Consider adding an organic garden to your yard or add some container gardening to your patio. Even a small number of plants can provide a substantial amount of food, combating rising grocery prices and ensuring that your family gets fresh, wholesome produce all summer long.
Add some aromatics to your walkways and beds. Aromatic herbs like lemon verbena give off a pleasant scent that is attractive to humans but often repellent to insects like mosquitoes. Look into adding a few aromatics to pots on your patios or, even better, between the cracks in your walkways and beds where they will give off their scent continually when stepped upon.
Clean up. It is always the right time to clean up your beds and yard, and May is a great time to think about pruning and cleaning your succulents and other plants that tend to be dormant this time of year. Your landscape professional can trim dead foliage, clean out beds, and re-mulch where needed to give you a clean, beautiful yard as you head into a fun summer season!

I must say that Juniper Landscape Company exceeded my expectations, completing the job in a timely fashion and for a fair price which we negotiated ahead of time, and which did not change even though there were difficulties with the terrain around my home in Stonebridge Estates (Scripps Ranch). Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
