While most people think of their yard as a relaxing outdoor space, it is much more than that. By choosing the proper landscaping plan and using the right types of plants and techniques, your yard can actually be a functional space that saves you money on your utility bills. The team at Juniper Landscape Company in San Diego have compiled a list of tips for creating a more utility-friendly landscape.
Create Shade – If you create shady areas around your home, you will save money on your utility bills. Experts estimate that when trees are placed in the right locations, they can cut air conditioning costs by 15 to 50 percent. Along with planting trees, you can also create shade by using a trellis and creeping vines.
Choose the Right Plants – While all trees can offer you the benefit of shade in the summer, some will also offer it in the winter. For example, evergreen trees are full all year, meaning your home will be shaded in the winter. This can actually increase your heating bill. A deciduous tree, like poplar and red oak, will only provide shade in the summer, when you want it.
Know Proper Placement – Planting shady trees will not do you any good if they are not planted in the proper place. Taller trees should be planted on the south side of the house while shorter plants should be placed west of the house. Plant trees 15-20 feet from the house.
Cut Water Costs – Water usage can also cause your utility bill to jump. Keeping a lawn green can take a lot of water. In some places where drought is a common issue, many homeowners are replacing lawns with creative gardening and landscaping to minimize or even completely eliminate turf. You also want to use good ground cover, like mulch, to help trap moisture to minimize the need for watering.
If you want to save money on your utility bills, you will be relieved to know that you do not have to overhaul your entire landscape. Instead, make a dent in your monthly water and air condition bill by following some of the above tips.

Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
