It’s hard to believe, but fall is nearly upon us! As we head into autumn, expect relatively warm temperatures to remain, but very little rain to fall. It is time to do a fall checkup to be sure you have everything you need for a healthy, happy yard throughout the fall season!
Your Fall Yard Checklist
Fall is a great time to catch up on certain jobs in your yard and garden. Here is a quick checklist of things you can do during this time of year to make your yard stronger and more beautiful:
Check irrigation systems. Irrigation is very important during the dry season in San Diego, so now is the time to be sure that your watering systems are in good working order. It may also be time to consider replacing your old, outdated sprinkler or watering system with a new one that saves water and helps the environment. You may also want to consider changing out thirsty plants for more drought-tolerant varieties to help you use less water overall.
Remove dead or dying plants. Diseased or dead plants are not only an eyesore; they can also contribute to poor health in your remaining plants. Be sure to keep an eye on plants that do not look as though they are thriving. You may need to adjust water or other additives; it is also possible that a specific disease is harming your plants. An expert in plant management can help you decide what to do.
Check for insect infestations. Some insects thrive in the dry, cool months of autumn, so be sure to watch for insects on or around your plants. There are many organic, non-toxic ways of dealing with insect pests; your yard maintenance expert can help you decide which method is best.
Check walkways and patios for damage. If you have broken or cracked walkways, patios, or other hardscape elements, now is the time to address the problem. Consider adding new items to your yard. Have you been thinking about adding a fire pit to your yard to enjoy those cool evenings outside? Perhaps you have been considering a new water feature or creating a new planting bed. Fall is a great time to take on those projects that will add beauty to your yard and value to your home!
