Is Vertical Gardening Here to Stay?

Much like fashion and cars, the world of landscaping is subject to trends. One landscaping trend that began showing up several years ago is showing real staying power.

We’re talking about vertical gardens.

What is Vertical Gardening?

In a vertical garden, you actually grow plants vertically – on a wall, the side of a fence or even on the side of your home, for example.

With most vertical gardens, the plants are secured to the surface wall with a moisture-proof skin. Irrigation is taken care of by rainwater.

Are There Any Benefits to Vertical Gardening Besides Appearance?

Vertical gardens do have a cool look, but vertical gardens provide plenty of other benefits.

  • They’re good for the environment. In addition to reducing heat and smog, vertical gardens also help to cleanse the outside air – reducing a building’s carbon footprint as it filters pollutants.
  • Vertical gardens maximize limited space. Some estimates predict that 80% of the world’s population will live in urban cities by the year 2050. With such dense urban areas, living space will be at premium. Through vertical gardens, you dramatically increase your growing space right away.
  • Biodiversity is increased. As more people move into already packed cities, the natural habitats and feeding grounds of birds, insects and other animals are negatively impacted.
Vertical gardens create more habitats for wildlife.
  • Your home or business is protected from the elements. Serving as a protective shield, your vertical garden can protect the exterior of your home or business from ultraviolet rays and severe weather.

What Kind of Soil Do I Need for a Vertical Garden?

This is yet another great benefit of vertical gardens; they often do not require soil. While you can use soil, another option is the use of hydroponics – the use of water or sand. This is safe for the plant as long as it receives the nutrients it would normally get from soil.

I must say that Juniper Landscape Company exceeded my expectations, completing the job in a timely fashion and for a fair price which we negotiated ahead of time, and which did not change even though there were difficulties with the terrain around my home in Stonebridge Estates (Scripps Ranch). Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

I have a side strip of yard which is on the street. The original landscaping was VERY high maintenance and not attractive. I was always out there cleaning up the leaf litter or be fined by the HOA. I hired Juniper Landscape Company. They came out and actually listened to what I wanted. They... Read More

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More

Jesse & Gabe, I want to extend my thanks to you and your crew for participating in the Yard Crashers project the past few days.
