Organic pest control refers to the use of non-harmful methods to keep pests away from plants. Within this broad definition, there are several important categories. If you are considering using organic pest control for your yard or garden, it is important to understand how organic pest control works and decide which method may be right for your particular needs.
Methods of Organic Pest Control
Before you choose a method of organic pest control, it is important to understand how everything works together in a yard or garden to maintain the ecosystem. Pest control is not usually accomplished by a single method, but rather must address several issues:
Weed control. Surprisingly, good pest control often begins with good weed control. Out-of-control growth of certain plant species can attract pests, including insects and diseases. By removing overgrowth from your yard, you remove the attraction that weeds have for these problems.
Planting the right species. Just as removing certain plants can help your yard stay pest-free, you can also help to maintain the health of your garden by adding certain plants. For example, garlic tends to drive away aphids, borers, and spider mites, while marigolds may repel beetles. Fennel is good for getting snails away from your garden, and mint varieties may cause whiteflies or worms to relocate. There are many plants that can help you drive away pests; however, it is also possible to drive away beneficial insects, so it is important to work with a landscape designer that understands this balance.
Neem oil. One of the best all-around organic pest-control methods is the application of neem oil to your plants. Neem oil does not harm plants but can significantly reduce insect problems. Further, neem oil can be applied at certain times to discourage pest reproduction, giving you a pest-free yard for the coming year as well.
Diatomaceous earth. Diatomaceous earth draws moisture away from insects, causing them to quickly move away from an area containing this type of soil. This is one of the best and most productive ways to protect your plants while also getting rid of insect pests.
pH balancing. By balancing the pH of your soil, you accomplish two tasks at once. First, you give your plants the right mixture of healthy nutrients to help them grow and produce. Second, you ensure that some diseases and other problems never take hold. Many dead or dying plants are simply not located in soil that has the proper pH or irrigation balance, and diseases have taken over. Correcting these balances can do wonders for your yard or garden without the application of any chemicals.

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
