Good gardening does not have to be an expensive proposition. In fact, San Diego gardening is one activity that lends itself to do-it-yourself and money-saving options. With our beautiful weather, long growing season and variety of native plants, you can choose the right components and techniques to keep your yard and landscape looking great with a minimal outlay of cash. Here are some tips to help from The Frugal Gardener by Catriona Tudor Erler.
Create your own compost. Why spend money on chemical treatments when you can create your own cost-effective compost from kitchen scraps. Choose anout-of-the-way spot for your compost heap and throw on anything organic. If you want faster results, dig a hole, throw in the kitchen scraps and plant on top of the heap. Do not use meat with this method, but fish and coffee grounds, including paper filters, are a great addition.
Create a homemade plant food. Soaking manure in a bucket of water then watering your plants turns your daily soaking into an intense powerhouse of energy for your plants without the harsh chemicals of store-bought food.
Cut down on mulch. Instead of piling on expensive mulch, try layering newspaper first, wetting it, then layering mulch on top. You may also get a discount by buying mulch in bulk quantities; see if someone wants to split a load with you.
Start small. Bigger plants are more expensive; after all, you are paying for all the work that was done to bring them up to size. However, you can do the same thing yourself, for free! Buy smaller plants, which are often much cheaper, and establish them in your yard. They will often take to surrounding conditions much more readily than their larger brothers, as well.
Go to seed. Purchasing self-seeding perennials is a smart way to ensure you have beautiful blooms year after year with a minimum of cost and effort. Try cosmos, impatiens, marigolds, poppies, black-eyed Susans, hollyhock, columbines and asters for self-seeding perennial beds. You can also divide clump plants such as iris, daffodil and hosta, to replant or trade with someone else.

I must say that Juniper Landscape Company exceeded my expectations, completing the job in a timely fashion and for a fair price which we negotiated ahead of time, and which did not change even though there were difficulties with the terrain around my home in Stonebridge Estates (Scripps Ranch). Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

I hired Juniper Landscape Company. They came out and actually listened to what I wanted. They... Read More

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
