Before you toss out the poinsettias or haul the tree to the dump, be sure you know how to use your holiday plants to the best advantage. Juniper Landscape Company offers tips for recycling or reusing popular holiday plants in your home or garden.
Poinsettias can last for a long time. A poinsettia plant does not need to be tossed out if you treat it carefully. Poinsettias are hardy down to 50 degrees, so you can actually set it outside after the danger of frost is over for the year. Start it on a shady porch and gradually move it to full sun. Cut your poinsettia back in January to encourage full foliage during the year and be sure to water it plentifully. If leaves are dropping, it needs more water. In October, the poinsettia must be placed in a darkened room to encourage blooming in December.
Darken your Christmas cactus as well. The Christmas cactus plant is another that blooms beautifully if it is placed in a darkened room in October and taken out at the beginning of December. In October, take in your poinsettias and Christmas cactuses, water and trim them lightly, then place them in a warm, dark room for the coming months. Water when the soil is dry. Take them out the first week of December and wait for a beautiful, showy bloom display to lighten up your holidays!
Recycle your Christmas tree. There are several organizations that recycle used Christmas trees. One way they use these trees is as compost to build up dunes on the beach. Christmas tree needles catch and hold sand, so they form a great foundation for building lasting dunes. Find out about groups in your area that may even be willing to come and pick your tree up and donate the used tree to these agencies.
Use your wreath for some time to come. If you have a wreath, remove the red bow and ornaments and decorate it with seashells or other climate-friendly symbols and hang it on your door all year. If you use a live wreath, it can be kept alive for some time after the holidays with a regular spritz of water. When the needles begin to drop heavily, it is time to dispose of the live wreath.
With the help of JCMS, you can have a beautiful lawn and garden throughout the holidays with well-chosen plants that not only give you holiday pleasure but also serve you well when the season is over!

Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
