How To Know When Your Irrigation System Needs Repair
Posted by San Diego Landscaper on Wednesday, 4 April , 2018
Many home and business owners have some form of irrigation system in place for their lawns and plants. However, few realize the money-saving and headache-preventing potential of a regular maintenance program for their irrigation system.
In this issue, we’ll talk about the various types of irrigation systems, explain why it makes sense to conduct routine maintenance inspections of your system and give tips for how to identify potential weak spots.
Surface irrigation. While no actual mechanical pump, gravity distributes the water across the target area.
Sprinkler irrigation. High-pressure sprinklers placed in a centralized location distribute the water overhead.
Localized irrigation. A network of pipes distributes low-pressured water to the desired areas.
Drip irrigation. Drops of water are applied at or near the actual roots of plants, usually by use of a hose laying on the ground or suspended over the target area. This method is especially effective at minimizing evaporation and runoff.
Why should I worry about maintenance of my irrigation system?
According to one expert, as much as 60% of all drinkable water used by a U.S. household is diverted for use outside on lawns and landscapes. With so much water being earmarked for our outdoor use, it’s easy to see why it makes sense to make sure none of it is wasted.
The different components of most irrigation systems have varying lengths of life expectancy.
Underground irrigation pipe systems typically last about 25-30 years.
High-quality sprinkler heads are good for 10-15 years of reliable use.
Wiring for irrigation systems will typically need to be replaced or repaired every couple of years.
How can I identify potential trouble spots in my irrigation system?
There are a number of things that should sound the alarm bells and signal to you that it’s time to make a few repairs to your irrigation system.
Seeing a sudden jump in your water bill.
The appearance of water bubbling from the ground or pooling over concrete.
Darker green spots or taller grass near the irrigation head.
Steady drip of water running from an irrigation head after the system has been turned off.

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic.
