How To Control Yard Pests Without Doing Damage

Posted by San Diego Landscaper on Wednesday, 11 May , 2022

It is always upsetting when you go out to enjoy your beautiful yard only to discover that some type of pest has been damaging your plants.  Before you take drastic action, however, consider the further damage you can do by using the wrong methods to control pests.  There are ways to control pests in your yard without harming your plants, friendly insects, or the environment.

Pest Control Begins With Knowledge

The old saying “knowledge is power” has never been more true than when you are dealing with yard pests.  Before you take any steps to eradicate the problem, you have to know what you are dealing with.

However, identifying yard pests can be a problem, since there are hundreds of species of insects, not to mention other animals, as well as viruses, bacteria, fungi, and other organisms that can harm your yard.  Begin by asking a few basic questions:

  • What type of damage is being done? Changing colors on leaves are often indicative of disease, while insect infestations often manifest with bitten or chewed plants.  In many cases, you may be able to spot the insects or their eggs with careful observation.  Birds and other animals often prey on fruit or blooms from your plants; their damage is usually on a larger scale and easier to see.
  • Am I seeing insects on the plants? Even if you do spot insects, you cannot assume that they are the cause of the problem.  In many cases, beneficial insects live side-by-side with harmful ones.  Pollinators are especially helpful in allowing your plants to bloom and fruit, and you must take care not to harm them as you decide what to do about harmful insects.
  • Where can I research harmful insects or animals? There are several online databases that help you identify insects if you can see them.  Some databases also include photos of damage from fungi, bacteria, or viruses.  However, be cautious:  researching may only give you a general idea of the type of organism you are dealing with.  Many insects look very similar but are in fact very different species.

What Can I Do If I Find Destructive Pests in My Yard?

While prevention is always the best strategy for pest control, there are times when you must take stricter measures.  Begin by ensuring that your plants are healthy; a healthy plant is much better able to ward off pest depredations.

There are also low-level interventions you can perform to help protect your plants.  Picking off harmful insects and spraying plants with water in targeted sprays can be beneficial, but require a great deal of work on your part.

I must say that Juniper Landscape Company exceeded my expectations, completing the job in a timely fashion and for a fair price which we negotiated ahead of time, and which did not change even though there were difficulties with the terrain around my home in Stonebridge Estates (Scripps Ranch). Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

I have a side strip of yard which is on the street. The original landscaping was VERY high maintenance and not attractive. Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
