Stormy winter weather may keep you inside soon, but you still have time to put the finishing touches on your fall gardening tasks. There are several things you can do in the next few weeks to keep your San Diego landscape looking great over the winter and even get a jump on spring!
Plant before the rains. Hopefully, there will be plenty of rain this year to soak wildflower seeds, perennials, bulbs and trees. Be sure to plant before the rain begins to get the full benefit of the anticipated rainfall. However, you should also be sure to adjust your automatic irrigation systems to account for extra water in the form of rain.
Purchase cool-season plants before the holidays. Nurseries often have great deals on end-of-fall cool-weather plants when they are trying to make room for holiday blooms. Check out your local nurseries for exciting ideas to add to your yard this year, including primroses, poppies, pansies and violas.
Choose plants that are budding, not blooming. Try to get “young” plants that are in a vegetative or budding state rather than in bloom. You will get better life from these plants and have more time to enjoy their blossoms.
Avoid warm-season plants at this time. Even if you think that you may put out warm-weather plants next year, wait until spring to buy them. They may not fare well over the winter and often root more successfully when they are put out at the right time. Save those purchases for next year; in the meantime, allow your winter plants to grow so that you will have a good idea of where you want to add spring blooms.
If plants are root-bound, be sure to loosen them before planting in the ground. Make sure roots have plenty of room to spread out, and add a high-blooming fertilizer mixture immediately after setting them, with follow up applications throughout the winter. A good grade of fertilizer will help you achieve the color you want in your yard throughout the year. However, it is also very important to use a safe formula that will not leach into the water system.

Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
