Go Native With Your Plants!

Posted by San Diego Landscaper on Wednesday, 12 February , 2020

If you’ve got plans to add to your landscaping this spring, we’ve got two words for you: go native. Beyond the “feel good by doing a good thing” notion, there are tangible reasons for utilizing California native plants in your landscape design.

In this issue, the San Diego landscaping experts with Juniper Landscape Company will talk about the numerous benefits of using California native plants.

What is a native plant?

Simply put, native plants are natural – or indigenous – to the geologic time and terrain of your area. They play a crucial role to the biodiversity of California.

While non-native plants can grow in the Golden State, they often need a host of stimulants (fertilizer and specialized care) to establish themselves.

How varied are native plant selections?

There’s an abundance of choices for California native plants. From the spring wildflowers of the desert terrain to the Monterey cypress groves along the coast, you’ll not have any trouble with finding the perfect plant or tree for your landscaping.

What are the benefits of using native plants?

In addition to improving your landscaping, studies show that using native plants is highly effective in improving the surrounding environment.

The ways they do this are numerous.

  1. The use of pesticides is reduced. Because native plants have already adjusted to our climate, environment and animal population, you won’t use nearly as many pesticides to control your plants.
  2. Native plants conserve water. We’re huge champions of water conservation, and native plants are effective frontline warriors in the fight to protect our water. When combined with drainage-control techniques, native plants can easily lead to a 60 percent reduction in the amount of water consumption.
  3. You’ll be working less. Because native plants require less water, pruning and fertilizing, more of your time will be spent enjoying your landscaping rather than working on it.
  4. The local biosphere is strengthened. Just as native plants are already accustomed to the area, the local wildlife population is already familiar with native plants. After installing new native plants and trees, you can rest assured that local birds and insects will take care of any mosquito problems and issues with other pesky creatures.

Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

I have a side strip of yard which is on the street. The original landscaping was VERY high maintenance and not attractive. Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
