It would be difficult to ignore the near instant tranquility one feels while standing on a golf course. For many, the anticipation of the game is more than enough to make the day a success. For others, its the magnificence of the seemingly flawless grass that brings a calm.
In this issue, we’ll share tips for how you can simulate that golf course look with your own lawn.
Use the right mower.
A reel mower will do a much better job of giving you an extremely clean cut than a rotary mower. That’s because a reel mower uses two blades that spin north and south, while most rotary mowers use just one blade.
Not too much off the top.
You may be tempted to scalp your lawn so that it looks like a golf green. But taking more than 1-2 inches off the top can make put your grass in a vulnerable position. The lower the grass height, the shorter its root systems will be. Just keep the height between 1-2 inches, and you should be fine.
Pick the right fertilizer.
The key is to choose a fertilizer that will release organic nitrogen as needed. This is important because if too much organic nitrogen is released at once, the top growth of your grass will take off, which is not good as it will make your grass more vulnerable to attacks from pests and disease.
Speaking of fertilizers, it’s a good idea to get into the habit of fertilizing on a regular basis. The key is to fertilize your lawn before you anticipate it experiencing stress from weather or footing.
Go easy with the watering.
Constant watering does not equal lush lawns. That’s because when there is an overabundance of water, your grass’s roots are actually shorter – and less strong – because they don’t have to search that hard for water.
Instead, the key is to water deeply and less frequently so that your grass’s root system will dig deep into the soil.
Your time is valuable, and so is your lawn. That’s why it’s often in the homeowner’s best interest to rely on the skill and expertise of a professional landscaping service.
