Get Ready for Spring Lawn Care Early!

Get ready for spring by preparing for yard work early so that you can hit the ground running when warmer days arrive.

Juniper Landscape Company in San Diego offers the following tips to get ready for upcoming spring yard work.

  • Rake, rake, rake. Clearing up leaves and trash in your yard is the first step in maintaining a healthy lawn, but controlling thatch is also a critical step that many people ignore. More than ½ inch of thatch is considered excessive. Thatch refers to the dead grass at the bottom of your lawn that can choke new growth. Be sure to start raking early and rake deeply in order to remove excessive thatch.
  • Stop compaction in its tracks. Winter is also a great time to do work that might be difficult or even harmful to your yard in summer. For example, it is easier to see compaction, or areas of high traffic, when your lawn is relatively low rather than when your grass begins to grow. Look for areas that are compacted to the point of bareness, but also check for the presence of moss plants. Aerate your lawn in those areas or work with your traffic patterns and install a path or walkway to prevent lawn damage.
  • The right time for lime. Grass needs a fairly neutral pH soil, and anything acidic will likely result in brown patches. Therefore, you may need to lime your soil and wait a bit before grass grows back. It is easy to check soil pH; either send a sample to your county’s extension office or do it yourself with a kit you can purchase at any home improvement store.
  • Over seed to hide bare patches. Soon it will be time to seed bare patches on your lawn. Apply slow-release nitrogen fertilizer when you over seed and a quick-release fertilizer five weeks after the grass germinates. Be sure you have no crabgrass before seeding; if you do, deal with the crabgrass first and reseed in the fall.
  • Try natural fertilizers. Begin composting so that you have a rich fertilizer for your lawn in the future. Compost anything that is organic except meat and bones, and do not add weeds to your compost heap as they may germinate when you spread the compost.

I must say that Juniper Landscape Company exceeded my expectations, completing the job in a timely fashion and for a fair price which we negotiated ahead of time, and which did not change even though there were difficulties with the terrain around my home in Stonebridge Estates (Scripps Ranch). Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

I have a side strip of yard which is on the street. The original landscaping was VERY high maintenance and not attractive. I was always out there cleaning up the leaf litter or be fined by the HOA. I hired Juniper Landscape Company. They came out and actually listened to what I wanted. They... Read More

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
