Our last two blogs were about recognizing heat damage in your plants and garden, and protecting them from the hot weather. You can read those here and here. In this article, we’ll focus on how to get the most from your garden this summer.
Pick ‘em while they’re fresh! Any fruits or veggies should be harvested as soon as they’re ripe. If they’re left on the vine too long, they’ll create more stress for the plants themselves. If you let them lay on the ground, you risk losing them to rot and animals.
Give your plants exactly what they need.
Make sure you fertilize your fruit trees exactly as recommended. One type does not fit all!
When to water?
A good way to tell if your plants need water is to stick your finger right into the soil. If the soil is dry up to your second knuckle, it’s time to water.
It may be tempting to increase the watering for native plants but rest assured – they’re well-adapted to our dry summer conditions.
Keep an eye out for plant pests!
Tomatoes are among the most popular garden plants – not only for humans but for hornworms as well. If left unattended, these pests can really wreck your tomatoes. You can recognize them by their markings: green with white and black markings on their legs.
For pests in general, you should check your plants once per week so you can take action before any serious damage is done. Identifying the critters is most important in determining what type of treatment to use.
Show your potted plants a bit of love.
Potted plants are in need of a bit of extra attention this time of year. Make sure you keep them mulched, watered and fertilized.

I must say that Juniper Landscape Company exceeded my expectations, completing the job in a timely fashion and for a fair price which we negotiated ahead of time, and which did not change even though there were difficulties with the terrain around my home in Stonebridge Estates (Scripps Ranch). Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
