Foundation Plantings Set the Tone for Landscaping

One of the most fundamental types of landscape planting is “foundation planting,” a term that refers to what you put next to your house. It is important that you use the right type and size of plants for foundation plantings, as they plants often come in contact with your home’s foundation, siding or other exterior aspects. Juniper Landscape Company in San Diego can help you pick out the perfect foundation plants to give your home curb appeal while at the same time protecting your structure from unintended damage.

Here are some tips for picking the right foundation plants to spruce up the exterior of your home.

  • Choose plants based on your home’s architecture. Modern architecture looks best with minimal plants that mimic the style’s clean, straight lines. On the other hand, a colonial home may look better with full, formal hedges and a small cottage or beach home may look best with casual, asymmetrical plantings. Choose plants that will enhance the overall feel of your home.
  • Do not cover up great features. If you have a great front entrance or a lovely stone foundation for your home, do not cover it up with plantings just because it seems like you should. Always think about how plantings are adding to or taking away from your home.
  • Choose plants that will bloom in all seasons. Stagger your plantings so that you always have something in bloom and something dormant. Not only does this create better visual interest but it also helps keep the soil and plants healthy. Stagger plants not only by seasons but also by height so that something interesting is happening in your yard all year and from every angle.
  • Think about size and scale. That plant that looks great now may be overpowering if it grows too big. Always adjust the varieties of plants you choose based on the mature size and scale of the plant.
  • Make a plan. Take a photo of your home from each angle and enlarge it. Print these photos out and tack them to the wall. This will make it easy for you to print out photos of proposed shrubs or plants and “try them out” on your home’s landscape. There are also computer programs than can help you visualize what certain plants will look like when placed in your yard.

  • Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
