Have you thought about adding plants to your San Diego garden but are stumped as to what to put in your beds or containers? JCMS can help San Diego homeowners choose the right plants to brighten up yards. With the help of experts from JCMS, San Diego gardens come alive with bright, beautiful plants that are also drought- and insect-resistant.

5 Choices You May Not Have Considered

Here are a few suggestions from the experts at Juniper Landscape Company of plants you may not have considered for your San Diego garden. These plants have the ability to grow in both containers and in the ground, making them ideal for almost any size or configuration of space.

  • “Million bells.” Calibrachoa, also known as million bells, is one of the most lovely and forgiving of plants. Its beautiful colors range from white to pink to purple, and it attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. Good drainage and a regular watering schedule are essential to keep million bells looking great and blooming all summer.
  • Lemon verbena. This lovely flower has a beautiful lemony scent that attracts people and butterflies alike. Most verbenas do well in drought, making this a great plant choice for gardens that do not get much attention. Feeding every two weeks will enhance the beautiful blooms.
  • Echinocactus grusoni. Sometimes called “Mexican cactus,” this succulent is known for its small yellow flowers and “hairy” white overgrowth. These plants reach four feet in height and need almost no maintenance, making them a great choice in semi-arid yards.
  • Sunset Strain. Lewisia cotyledon is actually an evergreen, so the foliage on this plant will last year-round. It needs very good draining to avoid rot, so put it in a rock garden or other area where it will not sit in water and enjoy the lovely blooms in season.
  • Cape Blanco. Sedum spathulifoliumresembles the cabbage rose with its lovely blue-green rosettes, but the trailing stems make this plant more like an ivy than a bush. Great for ground cover, Cape Blanco grows very low and works at the front of an interesting bed mix.

With the help of Juniper Landscape Company, you can have a beautiful yard that works well with your particular climate and takes advantage of your home’s natural features. Let Juniper Landscape Company introduce you to a whole new world of low-maintenance yard plant choices!

  • Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
