For many, getting the lawn mowing out of the way as fast as possible is a spring and summertime ritual. But when we do things too fast, mistakes are more likely to happen; mistakes that can do great damage to your lawn – also known as your investment.
In this issue, we’ll share a few of the more common “worst things possible” you could be doing to your lawn without even realizing it.
Cutting it too short. Short grass may look nice and neat but there’s a fine line between short and scalping. Shearing your lawn to its scalp robs it of the ability to absorb sunshine through its leaves (photosynthesis) – essentially putting your lawn into shock. A good general rule to remember is to never cut more than one-third from the grass blades.
Taking a week off from cutting. Do this and you risk your grass growing shaggy as opposed to thick. Also, if you let the mowing go long enough between mowings, you may miss potential gaps that could develop between the blades.
If you do miss a week or two, resist the urge to shear it on your next mowing. Instead, go over the lawn several times, gradually adjusting the blade height with each lap around.
Mowing at the wrong time. Mowing in the morning is a bad idea because your grass will likely still be wet from the morning dew. Mowing at noontime can stress you and your lawn. Instead, mow in the late afternoon or early evening. By then, the grass has had time to completely dry and the heat will not be as bad.
Mowing with dull blades. Lawn mower blades that haven’t been sharpened can rip or shred the blades – and that’s not a good thing. If you haven’t already, take your mower to a lawn equipment shop so that they can sharpen your blades for you. This cuts down on the water loss and increases photosynthesis.

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways.
