The San Diego County Water Authority and the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California have upped their game with increased financial offerings to San Diego residents who replace their turf with sustainable landscaping features.

Residents of San Diego could qualify for $2.75 per square foot of lawn replaced with sustainable landscaping. Customers of the City of San Diego residential water could be eligible for an additional $1.25 per square foot for certain projects.
That’s an increase of the $1.75 per square foot offered during 2016. Then, more than 175 San Diego homeowners took advantage of the incentive and cashed in while transforming their lawn at the same time.
Also, under the current plan businesses are eligible for $1 per square foot of lawn replaced.
“Over the past few years, the Water Authority has helped foster sustainable landscaping through financial incentives, a demonstration garden, hands-on classes and publication of a detailed guidebook,” said Mark Muir, chair of the Water Authority’s Board of Directors.
“We’re excited to take the next step so that homeowners in the San Diego region can maximize their rebates with one application.”
Simply put, sustainable landscape revolves around selecting plants and landscaping features that are natural and adaptable to the Southern California climate.
Ideally, the new sustainable landscape will reduce the waste of water while nurturing the soil, recycling organic matter, and conserving energy.
