You and your guest aren’t the only ones who love your flowers, plants, and veggies. Chances are good that there’s a host of pests who love chomping on your homegrown goodness.
In this article, we’ll talk about how to develop an action plan for protecting your plants from pests.
Make sure you’ve selected the best plants for your site.
One of the best defenses against pests is a healthy garden or plant site. You’ll be farther ahead of the game in that area if you grow plants that can at least tolerate the soil, sun exposure, temperature and other conditions of your site.
Develop a plan around plant health.
Everything from your planting time, soil prep, fertilization and pruning should be done in such a way to discourage pests.
Pull and discard weak plants away from the garden area – they may already be infected and attracting predators.
Make your soil health and organic through natural composting methods, mulching and “top-dressing” your soil with compost or natural fertilizer.
Limit the insects’ habitat by clearing your garden of debris and weeds.
Interplant and rotate your crops because many insect pests are picky about what plants they’ll attack. By mixing the plants, the pests are much less likely to spread throughout a particular crop.
Ensure you know what you’re dealing with by identifying pests before you take action. While many of them look alike, any misidentification of the pests can result in inappropriate and ineffective treatment. You can get help in pest identification by getting touch with the County Department of Agriculture.

I must say that Juniper Landscape Company exceeded my expectations, completing the job in a timely fashion and for a fair price which we negotiated ahead of time, and which did not change even though there were difficulties with the terrain around my home in Stonebridge Estates (Scripps Ranch). Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
