One of the great joys of gardening is getting to eat your own fresh produce. San Diego gardens regularly produce bumper crops of favorites, including avocados, peppers, and other fruits and vegetables. Many homeowners find great satisfaction in growing at least part of their family’s food, and many find it a much healthier option than shipped-in produce found in grocery stores, particularly if they focus on growing food organically without pesticides or herbicides.
Can you really grow food to feed your family, even in a small suburban yard or on a patio? The answer is yes if you are willing to work with the space and resources that you have.
Choosing the Right Organic Gardening Method
One thing to consider when planning an organic garden is the method you will employ. Essentially, you have three options when it comes to gardening:
Traditional ground-based gardening. Many homeowners incorporate fruiting trees or plants as part of their overall landscape plan and have more or less permanent areas of their yards devoted to this purpose. In-ground gardening poses unique challenges but offers the benefit of dedicated gardening space than can be used again and again with proper soil amendment, as well as the best chance to grow in volume. Ground-based gardening is often used when placing trees or other permanent plants in your yard, so you must also consider how large the plant will eventually get, where shade will fall, and other factors.
Raised-bed gardening. Many organic gardeners opt for raised beds for a variety of reasons. It is much easier, and often less expensive, to amend soil in a small raised bed as opposed to a larger area of the yard. Raised beds can be constructed to take advantage of sloping landscape or other areas that might not be amenable to in-ground gardening. Finally, raised beds allow gardeners to easily reach their plants from all angles and can be fitted into a relatively small footprint. This makes them ideal for smaller yards.
Container gardening. Even those who have little to no yard space can enjoy the benefits of organic produce by utilizing patio or container gardening. Growing smaller versions of plants in containers makes it easy to manage plants even in tiny areas or on patios or balconies around apartments. Containers allow the gardener to control watering, fertilization and other factors while making the best use of small spaces. Many organic gardeners opt for vertical gardening, in which plants are placed in a series of containers that are stacked vertically on a trellis or wall. This makes the most use of space and can be a viable alternative to grow a surprising amount of food in a very small area.

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
