The dormant times are ideal pruning opportunities for fruit trees. Specifically, we’re talking from December to January or even through February. If you prune them during the warmer months, you run the risk of slowing their ripening process, which can make the fruit vulnerable to sun damage.
Trees including cedar, cypress, redwoods, pines and eucalyptus all should be pruned from November through February.
The prime time for pruning these trees is between November and January. Examples include ash, birch, maple, sycamore, sweet gum, Italian alder, Chinese elm, Chinese pistache, ginkgo, cape chestnut and fruitless mulberry.
You can actually start pruning these now as the optimum time is October through March. These trees include camphor, carrotwood, oaks, olive, peppermint, kaffir plum and bronze loquat.
In most cases, you should wait until the tree is finished flowering before pruning. These trees include crape myrtle, cape chestnut, lemon bottlebrush, coral trees, Bradford pears, and acacias.
HOW TO PRUNE
There’s a bit more involved in pruning than just blindly cutting limbs. Here’s how we recommend you proceed:
Take a few moments to examine the tree’s dimensions and imagine how it will look once the limb(s) you want to remove has been cut.
Make note of – and avoid cutting – the major branches that establish the tree’s frame.
Once you’ve identified the damaged branches or the ones you simply want to remove, make your cut – on the underside of the branch – several inches away from the trunk.
Only remove the limbs that are necessary to be removed; each cut potentially weakens the tree’s defense mechanisms from insects and other dangers.

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
