Fall Gardening Tips for San Diego Homeowners

Posted by San Diego Landscaper on Tuesday, 3 November , 2015

San Diego residents enjoy a rare type of climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters with plenty of precipitation. This climate is considered “Mediterranean” and is similar to that enjoyed in some of the world’s most beautiful locations. In a Mediterranean climate, fall is one of the best times to plant: just before the rainy winter and after the heat of summer.

During the fall months, you can take several important steps to improve your yard and add new plants to your landscape, including:

  • Plant deciduous fruit trees. San Diego yards can support a wide variety of fruit trees, and fall is one of the best times to introduce them. You should be very sure you understand the plant’s needs and seek professional advice for locating and planting the trees so that you do not accidentally harm them. It may also be necessary to support the trees for some time with stakes or other supports in order to allow them to take root and become strong enough to flourish.
  • Plant shrubbery. If you are considering ground cover and shrubbery to fill your beds, fall is a great time to introduce these plants. Choose woody shrubs that will take root and last for many years rather than delicate exotic varieties. Be sure to determine correct planting distances from your foundation and between individual plants in order to avoid crowding your shrubs as they grow.
  • Choose native plants. Lavender, lupine or any of the 5,500 native plant species in California are the best choices for a San Diego garden. Because California has more native species than any other state, it is easy to find the right plants to match your existing landscape or to add new pops of color, texture and size.
  • Prepare your garden for new plants. Fall is not only a great time to plant; it is also a great time to clean out old, dead or dying plants. Take a long look at your garden and determine if there are areas where you should remove plants, perhaps making room for new species.

With the help of a professional gardening firm like Juniper Landscaping Service, you can choose the perfect plants for your yard and place them properly. JLS can also provide you with year-round maintenance to ensure that your new plants thrive and continue to bring you beauty and enjoyment for a long time to come.

I must say that Juniper Landscape Company exceeded my expectations, completing the job in a timely fashion and for a fair price which we negotiated ahead of time, and which did not change even though there were difficulties with the terrain around my home in Stonebridge Estates (Scripps Ranch). Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

I have a side strip of yard which is on the street. The original landscaping was VERY high maintenance and not attractive. Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
