Fall is here, and while San Diegans do not enjoy the brisk changes in the weather evident in other parts of the country, we still love autumn and all the beauty and color it brings! If you are looking for a great way to bring some fall color into your yard, why not try some fall-blooming flowers that work well in our San Diego climate? Juniper Landscape Company is ready to help with our suggestions for great fall foliage and blooms in your yard.
The Hong Kong Orchid Tree, Bauhinia X blakeana. This is a semi-evergree “tree” that grows relatively small at 15 feet with proper pruning. It produces blossoms of beautiful six-inch “orchids” twice a year in the fall and spring.
Crape Myrtle or Lagerstroemia indica. This is a favorite tree of homeowners everywhere with its lovely white, red, pink or purple blossoms that bloom in the fall in San Diego. This no-maintenance tree will bloom year after year once it is established.
Glossy Abelia or Abelia x grandiflora. This lovely shrub grows only three feet tall and wide, making it an excellent home foundation choice. The lovely white flowers with rose edges bloom from late summer through the winter, making this a great fall planting option.
Kangaroo Paw or This lovely evergreen perennial is practically non-maintenance and blooms with red, green, yellow or purple “kangaroo paw” flowers that attract hummingbirds in the fall.
‘Sticks on Fire’ Pencil Bush or Euphorbia tirucalli. If you are looking for a succulent for your desert yard, this plant with its orange-pink and red branches grows five feet tall and can also be kept as a houseplant. Try it for a burst of fall color in your arid landscape.
Coral Fountain or Russelia equisetiformis. If you want a plant that is hardy to 32 degrees but will also bounce back quickly after a frost, the Coral Fountain, with its cascading red or white flowers, is a great choice.
Tropical Sunset California Poppy or Eschscholzia californica. This lovely poppy will bloom in the fall with rose, yellow, white and traditional orange blossoms. Try it anywhere in your yard for a burst of brilliant color.
