Don’t Know What To Do With The Cold? Grow A Winter Garden!

If you have ever dreamed of having fresh vegetables on your table that you grew with your own hands in your own yard, you are in luck. San Diego is one place where it is very easy to grow vegetables and fruits all year long due to the mild climate. While the weather is very warm most of the year, there are still some plants that grow better in the winter months.

According to the Master Gardeners of San Diego, sponsored by the University of California at San Diego, winter gardens will thrive if you choose these plants:

  • Beets. Also called “sugar beets,” the bright red color of these root vegetables are indicative of their nutritional value. Plant them in September and enjoy them throughout the winter months either cooked or chopped finely in salads.
  • Broccoli. If you enjoy this ubiquitous vegetable, you are in luck; the growing season for broccoli extends almost throughout the year. Start the plants from seeds in August or from small plants in September and grow through February.
  • Cabbage. Like broccoli, cabbage has a long growing season. You can start seeds in August or plants in September and harvest the heads throughout the winter.
  • Cauliflower. Follow the same growing season advice as for broccoli or cabbage and enjoy this vegetable throughout the cool season as well.
  • Lettuce, Endive, Kale and Kholrabi. These leafy vegetables should be started no later than September and can be harvested throughout the winter into April or May, depending on the species.
  • Onions. The “short day” onion should be planted in October, while the “medium day” can be planted in January. These are quick-growing plants, so expect to harvest them within a month or two. Green onions can be grown between September and May.
  • Peas. Depending on the variety, you can plant bush peas in September and harvest them through March.
  • Potatoes. The “Irish” variety has two growing seasons in this mild climate: those planted in February and those planted in August. Grow a winter potato crop to fill in your vegetable supply.
  • Spinach. This iron-packed favorite can be planted in September and harvested through April.

I must say that Juniper Landscape Company exceeded my expectations, completing the job in a timely fashion and for a fair price which we negotiated ahead of time, and which did not change even though there were difficulties with the terrain around my home in Stonebridge Estates (Scripps Ranch). Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

I have a side strip of yard which is on the street. The original landscaping was VERY high maintenance and not attractive. I was always out there cleaning up the leaf litter or be fined by the HOA. I hired Juniper Landscape Company. They came out and actually listened to what I wanted. They... Read More

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More

Jesse & Gabe, I want to extend my thanks to you and your crew for participating in the Yard Crashers project the past few days. I know we are all exhausted due to the demands of filming and the logistics of the project with so many people involved. One of the positive elements I found in... Read More
