Deciding Between a Saltwater and a Chlorinated Pool
Posted by San Diego Landscaper on Monday, 20 April , 2020
If you’re thinking of installing a pool or re-doing your existing pool, a key thing to consider is whether you want a saltwater or chlorinated pool.
There are pros and cons to each, and we’ll talk about them in this issue.
Pros and Cons of a Saltwater Pool
Many people make the mistake of assuming that a saltwater pool is the same as swimming in the ocean. In reality, a saltwater pool contains roughly one-tenth of the salinity as the ocean.
Also, in spite of the name, a saltwater pool does contain chlorine. It’s there because the saltwater uses electrolysis to make its own chlorine. It’s a lower level than a fully chlorinate pool, but the chlorine is in there and released at a more gradual pace.
The main benefits of a saltwater pool include the following.
Little maintenance. A popular saying of pool owner is they’re “the last one able to enjoy a pool because they’re so busy with the maintenance.
It’s easy on the eyes and your skin. Because of the lower chlorine level, you and your guest will experience fewer irritations to your skin and eyes. The sensation from a saltwater pool is more akin to water softeners.
It’s more cost-effective. Even though it’s a little more expensive because of the initial cost of a saltwater generator, you’ll still come out better because you’ll be using fewer chemicals than with a chlorinated pool.
Among the potential downsides of saltwater pools are the following.
Pool problems require technicians with saltwater pool experience. Saltwater pools can be a bit more complex, which makes having professional help a must when issues arise.
Your accessories may be limited. The saltwater can play havoc with pool liners, underwater lighting, and other features.
Pros and Cons of a Chlorinated Pool
Just as with a saltwater pool, there are upsides and potential downsides to a chlorinated pool.
Let’s start with the pros.
You’ll probably need less upfront money. Beyond the digging of the foundation, installing piping, and the pool lining, the initial costs of a chlorinated pool are typically less because you’re not having to install a saltwater generator.
Maintenance is easier when problems arise. Because chlorinated pools are simpler to operate, there’s usually little need to call a technician.
You’ll be able to include more accessories. Since a chlorinated pool is typically less corrosive, you should be able to add just about any pool accessory you have in mind.
The potential cons for a chlorinated pool include the following.
You’re in for regular maintenance. Testing and adjusting your pool’s chemical balance will need to be done throughout the week, and especially after storms.
There will likely be a strong smell of chlorine. There’s no mistaking the smell of chlorine. What you’re actually smelling is chlorine battling it out with bacteria.

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways.
