You might be surprised to learn how many plants are both beautiful and edible. These great plants can be integrated into your landscape and still provide you with wonderful meals. JCMS is a landscaping company in San Diego that will help you achieve the garden of your dreams, and is proud to share information with clients about how to make gardens both beautiful and functional.
Here is a list of plants that are both beautiful and edible and tips on growing each in your San Diego yard:
Angel Red Pomegranate, Punica granatum ‘Smith’. Pomegranates are a gift of nature with their delicious edible seeds, their lovely orange-red flowers and their fountain branches that spill over large containers when planted on a patio.
Blueberry ‘Bountiful Blue’, Vaccinium corymbosum ‘FLX-2’. Try growing your own blueberries this year and you will be surprised at the bountiful harvest you receive not only in fruit but in beautiful pink and white flowers as well. These plants also thrive when planted near another variety for cross-pollination.
Corky’s Honey Delight Fig, Ficus carica Corky’s Honey Delight. Plant a fig tree and you will have a delicious and healthy snack right at your fingertips. This small tree performs well in coastal location and can be trained as a shrub when it is grown in a container.
Rainbow chard, Beta vulgaris. This brightly-colored plant will light up your garden as well as your next salad! Pick the leaves of this plant for cooking or eating raw. Its tangy taste is a favorite of many. An added bonus is that chard is a cool weather crop so it brings color and flavor to your garden during a season that may be somewhat bland.
Eggplant, Solanum melongena. The common eggplant is a surprisingly beautiful plant with broad, green leaves, lovely hanging purple fruit and, best of all, a rich harvest at the end of the growing season. Be sure to water eggplant thoroughly for the best produce.
Mint, Parsley, Basil and other herbs. An herb garden is a great way to capitalize on the unused space around the edges of your large containers. Imagine the joy of picking fresh herbs from your own garden every time you want to season something! Group herbs together by water and sunlight needs for the easiest ways to grow them.

I must say that Juniper Landscape Company exceeded my expectations, completing the job in a timely fashion and for a fair price which we negotiated ahead of time, and which did not change even though there were difficulties with the terrain around my home in Stonebridge Estates (Scripps Ranch). Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

I have a side strip of yard which is on the street. The original landscaping was VERY high maintenance and not attractive. I was always out there cleaning up the leaf litter or be fined by the HOA. I hired Juniper Landscape Company. They came out and actually listened to what I wanted. They... Read More

Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
