From Citrus to Roses; Gardening Advice for August

Posted by San Diego Landscaper on Wednesday, 17 August , 2016
roses, gardening

This is a fantastic time of the year for gardening. As we enter the latter weeks of summer, here are a few tips for the home gardener.

  • August is an ideal month to start or add to your citrus orchard.
While lemons, limes, and oranges tend to do well throughout the county, grapefruit and tangelos have been shown to thrive more when planted inland.

After planting the citrus, water it once per week to start. As the tree matures, you’ll, of course, want to increase the watering time, but in the early stages, it’s best to go easy on the watering. Too much can lead to rot and other diseases.

  • Harvest what you’ve got.
Homegrown veggies – especially cucumbers, squash, and beans – need to be harvest daily. As for corn, pick when the silk turns brown. When eggplant is purple-black and shiny, it’s ready to be picked.
  • Get rid of the ants.
Well, we can’t really get rid of them, but it’s during hot weather like we’re experiencing when ants make a beeline for potted plants and your kitchen counters. They’re on the lookout for food and water.

To keep the ants away, it’s important to be as meticulous as you can about cleanliness. It’s also a good idea to plug any small entry points into your home.

Bait stations with insecticides are especially good for eventually eliminating entire colonies.

  • Be good to the natives.
If you can, avoid transplanting native plants during the summer months. It’s best to transplant them in the fall if you can wait.
  • Summer care for the roses.
A good rule-of-thumb is to prune roses at the end of the month. You can actually trigger new growth during this time by renewing your mulch and water deep once per week. Be sure to monitor your watering so that you’re not overdoing it.

It’s also a good idea to mist the leaves on the hotter days to give your roses a break from the stress of the heat.

I must say that Juniper Landscape Company exceeded my expectations, completing the job in a timely fashion and for a fair price which we negotiated ahead of time, and which did not change even though there were difficulties with the terrain around my home in Stonebridge Estates (Scripps Ranch). Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

I have a side strip of yard which is on the street. The original landscaping was VERY high maintenance and not attractive. Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
