Choosing Xeroscaping/Xeriscaping Options To Keep Your Yard Beautiful

Posted by San Diego Landscaper on Wednesday, 6 July , 2022

Many San Diego homeowners are interested in xeroscaping, otherwise known as xeriscaping, to build a beautiful, eco-friendly yard.  However, they also worry that their options for plants will be limited, and the results will be less than spectacular.  This does not have to be true!  A xeroscape or xeriscape yard can be just as beautiful as any other yard with careful plant choices and the use of other elements such as hardscaping and fire or water features.

What is Xeriscaping?

The term “xeriscaping” refers to landscape design that uses very little water and requires no irrigation.  Normally, this effect is achieved by choosing plants that are extremely drought-tolerant and require little to no watering, although this is not always the case.  The use of hardscape and other features can achieve a close to zero-water use yard without sacrificing beauty and functionality.

How Can I Create a Xeriscaping Plan?

The first step in creating a beautiful yard using xeriscaping is to have a strong design.  Xeriscaping does not happen by accident–it is the result of a conscious choice in everything from elements to arrangement.  The steps in designing a working xeriscaping plan are:

  • Consider the space. Every space is different, and it is important to consider the size and layout of a yard before landscape designing.  By utilizing your existing space, you can plan a landscape that will work with your yard instead of trying to overcome obstacles.  This ultimately saves you money and time.
  • Consider watering sources. Xeriscaping or xeroscaping does not mean that you cannot ever water your plants; it simply means that the design focuses on how to use the least amount of water possible.  Your first line of watering defense is rainfall, so it is important to know your rain averages and times of the year.  Next, you choose plants that thrive in those conditions so that irrigation is not necessary.  Finally, you make a backup plan to deliver water to your plants on occasion if the regular rainfall schedule does not work.
  • Consider non-plant elements. One of the things you want to consider in your landscaping plan is hardscaping.  Hardscaping refers to things that are not living–sidewalks, patios, walls, and fountains or fire features.  These elements can add beauty and functionality to your yard without requiring any watering at all; even your water features can be low-use and eco-friendly!

Juniper Landscape Company was on-time,... Read More

I have a side strip of yard which is on the street. The original landscaping was VERY high maintenance and not attractive. Juniper Landscape Company has been fantastic. Before them, we ran through three or four other lawn and landscape maintenance companies who did spotty and sometimes outright poor work, were not always reliable and who ended up creating problems for us in a variety of ways. That experience led us to subscribe to Angie's List... Read More
