Recent weather conditions may force California residents to cut back on water usage, according to reports.
California water regulators have created a water conservation plan which restricts landscape watering to only two times a week. Statistics show that watering lawns and gardens accounts for 70 percent of water usage in the state. Many local areas already have rules in place governing water usage. This state-wide regulation will affect all areas, even those that do not have current water restrictions. It is estimated that this statewide cutback on landscape watering will reduce water consumption by 20 percent.
Mixed Reactions to Water Cutback
There have been mixed reactions to the recent water regulations. Many homeowners, due to previous water restrictions, have decided to ditch the lawn and opt for a more water-friendly landscape design. Landscape designs that implement local, drought-resistant plants can easily survive on the twice-a-week watering regulations, unlike green lawns which require much more water to survive.
Other residents are not pleased about the cutback on water usage. One resident complained that though she does not have a lawn she does have a large organic garden which feeds her family. Cutting back on watering this garden will certainly impact her ability to grow food.
